Our native and much loved hawthorns are to be seen all around Ireland. Full of rich scented white blossom in May and adorned with red fruits haws in winter which are a valuable food source for birds. Hawthorn can cope with with anything except water logging, physical damage from rabbits, mechanical strimmers and the dreaded roundup. To plant a dense stock proof hedge you need five plants per metre.
